Forests of the Future: Research and Forest Management in an Era of Change
About
Forests are complex and dynamic ecosystems that provide a wide range of ecological, economic, and social services, including carbon storage, biodiversity conservation, water regime and nutrient cycle regulation, timber production, and multiple contributions to societal well-being. Their functioning and stability are the result of long-term interactions between natural processes and human influence. In times of global change, forest ecosystems face numerous challenges affecting their sensitivity, resilience, and long-term sustainability. Changes in forest structure and composition, disturbances to natural processes, and intensifying pressures on forests require an integrated approach connecting scientific research and forest management practice. Science and close-to-nature forest management play a key role in understanding forest ecosystem dynamics, developing management and governance adaptation methods, and particularly in revitalizing and restoring forest habitats. Special attention is given to the adaptation of forest management, aiming to preserve stability, functionality, and the multiple roles of forests in the future. The conference "Forests of the Future: Research and Forest Management in an Era of Change" provides a platform for exchanging knowledge and experiences on contemporary approaches to forest ecology, close-to-nature silviculture, biodiversity, monitoring, and long-term research, with emphasis on connecting scientific insights and practical solutions in forest management.
